Training Course on Integrated
Fish Farming
China has the longest history of aquaculture practice. Currently, its national annual fishery production and aquaculture production rank the first in the world. The inland aquaculture, especially pond fish culture, has developed rapidly in China. China's aquaculture is characterized by the INTEGRATED FISH FARMING practices with its own technical packages. AIMS AND NATURE OF THE COURSE The course is organized in order to promote aquaculture development in the developing countries. The objective of the course is to transfer the techniques and experience of Chinese integrated fish farming, to endow the participants with specialized knowledge of relevant subjects and practical techniques used in field through theoretical studies and practical training during the course. Multi-disciplinary in nature, it will cover all the essential technical aspects of integrated fish farming, and will be very much practical-oriented so as to provide participants with on-hand experiences. In addition, the course will also deal with following issues: (1) successful integration of fish farming and other farm activities; and (2) establishment of sustainable aquaculture systems with low input and high output which can achieve the optimal ecological benefit. DATE AND DURATION The duration of the training course is 3 months from April to July. VENUE The training headquarters is at the Asian-Pacific Regional Research and Training Centre for Integrated Fish Farming in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China. COURSE PROGRAMME Course contents:

Training methods: The training program comprises of theoretical lectures, lab work, academic exchange, practical work, demonstrations, discussions and study tours, etc. Approximately, 45% of the course time is allocated for lectures while the rest for lab work, field work, study tour and other activities. Some lecture hours are set apart for the purpose of acquiring further information on other related subjects (e.g. pen and cage culture, culture in open waters and harvesting techniques). The course will also provide the participants with the opportunity to exchange ideas and experience on inland aquaculture development in the respective countries. Therefore, each participant is required to prepare a review paper on your national fishery development just for the presentation during the training course. C. Medium of instruction: The working language is English. The participants are required to have good English proficiency in reading, listening, speaking and writing. EXAMINATION AND CERTIFICATE The performance of the participant shall be judged by a series of evaluations. There shall be written test, which consists of different types of questions. Marks will also be given on the performance and diligence of participants in laboratory, fieldwork and practical records/reports. A certificate of proficiency will be awarded on the successful completion of the course. The allotment of marks will be as follows: a). Written tests 50%b). Practical records/reports 25% c). Performance and diligence 25% TARGET GROUP AND REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSIONS Course participants are mainly technical and managerial personnel currently engaged in fisheries from the developing countries. Application by women is strongly encouraged. In general, the applicants should: 1. have completed a diploma in fisheries, biology or other related disciplines, or equivalent qualification; 2. have worked in aquaculture or the relevant field for at least two years; 3. be preferably between 25-45 years old; 4. have a good health, without infectious disease and with the capability to keep up the study until the fulfillment of the training course; 5. not bring any family members to attend the course; 6. pledge to observe all the Chinese laws and regulations and respect the local customs during the training period in China; 7. prepare a review paper on your national fishery development. TRAINING EXPENSES 1. The expenditure of training, board and lodging, local transportation for the purpose of training, including 40-yuan/per capita as daily pocket money, during the training period in China for the participants funded by Chinese Government will be borne by the training centre. 2. For the other expenses including the international travel expenses and transit/transfer cost and so on between the home country of participants and Shanghai should be borne by the participants themselves, or their employer or their government or international funding agencies, e.g. FAO, UNDP and NACA etc. 3. The government of the country which sends participants to the training course should assume the responsibility for their insurance, cost of medical care, monthly salary etc. during the training period. 4. Due to the limitation of fellowships provided by the Chinese government, the participants who can support themselves or funded by individual government or international organizations are also welcome to join the training course after getting the admission permit from the Centre or NACA and handing in US$7000 (Seven Thousand US Dollars only) as for the training fees. 5. The board and lodging for participants will be arranged by the course organizer during the training period. Participants will be accommodated in double-bed rooms in the centre's guesthouse. . APPLICATION AND ADMISSION APPROVAL 1. The applicant should be nominated by their respective government. The duly completed application form should bear the endorsement and recommendation by the department concerned of the government and be submitted with a valid health certificate provided by an authorized physician or hospital to the Economic Consul of the Chinese Embassy to your respective country for its examination, verification, endorsement, and recommendation , which will be transferred to the training centre in China after the official approval. 2. The Chinese Embassy will issue the admission notice to the accepted applicant through the department concerned of applicant's government. The participant, with the admission notice, will go through all the other necessary formalities and come to China for the training course as scheduled. 3. For those participants who are not funded by the Chinese government, their nomination and admission will be processed and approved by the Centre or NACA .
